Crab Maui

More Moana Fan Art!

I wanted to practice and challenge myself since I'm going back to drawing again in my spare time. So over the weekend, I had this idea of drawing out one of my favorite Moana fan headcannons out there. I know this never happened and this is more than unlikely, but I kind of like the headcannon that Maui could shapeshift into other creatures besides the ones he could do in the film and one of those transformations that sounded interesting is that he could shapeshift into a crab like Tamatoa. Again, he never does this and I don't think he could really do it, but I like the idea due to how both characters shadow and foil each other. So I drew Maui as a monster crab from Lalotai with an added bonus of Mini-Maui excited. I think I'm doing better this time.

Notes:
- It's unlikely that most of the tattoos would be shown in his transformation, but I did them anyway to practice and challenge myself. Plus since tattoos are a work of art, I wanted to do it in contrast to Tamatoa.
- It was very difficult to get the accurate tattoos right and I had to change up my drawing style a bit.
- In his transformations, there's a hook symbol on the creature to represent Maui using the hook. You could see it on the bottom left.
- I chose the colors red and orange because of Maui's personality mostly and to contrast Tamatoa's blue/purple colors.
- Usually, the tattoos on Maui's skin alter themselves depending on the transformation... however, I cannot draw crab tattoos, hence why you see normal Mini-Maui here.
- I feel like in contrast to Tama, Maui would have sharper and cleaner teeth. Also, no barnacles.
- If Maui uses this form, it would mostly be for teasing and/or impressing others.
